The Babe Ruth Birthplace

On February 6, 1895, a small brick rowhouse found at 216 Emory Street in downtown Baltimore became a future hi714CLUB.LOGO.CLR.jpgstorical landmark when George Herman "Babe" Ruth was born in an upstairs bedroom. Babe Ruth grew up to become baseball's best player, America's first sports celebrity and an international icon, while the house at 216 Emory Street fell into disrepair. Scheduled for demolition in the late 1960s, the house would be saved by a group of concerned citizens, and thus, in 1974, the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum was born. Since its opening more than 30 years ago, the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum has attracted hundreds of thousands of fans from across the country and the world who have come to pay tribute to the legacy of "The Babe." In 2006, the 714 Club, named for Babe's record-setting career home run total, was launched to raise funds to renovate the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum. The renovation of the Birthplace will include constructing architectural improvements renovation_2.jpgas well as designing new and innovative ways to showcase our collection of memorabilia and to tell Babe Ruth's story. Changes will include a wheel-chair accessible main entrance, fully ADA-compliant restroom facilities, a two-tiered exhibit room, and an elevator. As for the exhibits, Museum staff learned much while creating our Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards attraction, and we will bring that same level of creativity and interactivity to the all-new Birthplace.
